Poem for a Newborn

"Of all life's small things, the greatest is the one whose smallness turns our world upside down — forever."

.

You were born from a shooting star,

from the softest summer seed,

from a rainbow stretched across the sky,

from a mother and father's deepest dream.

.

A little one makes love stronger, days shorter, nights longer, the bank account smaller, and the home a whole lot happier. They make you forget the past and feel like the future is worth every single moment.

.

A gentle touch of a tiny finger,

a soft kiss on the sweetest lips —

wishing your little one all the joy,

and filling your home with love and warmth.

.

What is that smile about, little one,

so new to this world?

What do you know of all that's out there?

You feel love and the warmth of a held close —

and for now, that's all you need.

.

Nothing in this world rests so deeply

as your small face, so wonderfully sweet.

As if from God's own endless stillness

and wholeness, you look back at me.

Aale Tynni

.

Cuddle, tickle, love

and stroke that little head.

Hold them close and keep them warm,

never hold a kiss back.

Be generous with gentle words,

touch a cheek, a tiny hand.

Rock them, hold them, cherish them —

pull them in and don't let go.

Katriina Ahonen, from "Kiisseliviikset"

.

"Look," said Winnie-the-Pooh, pointing to the ground.

"What?" asked Piglet.

"New footprints. Two have become three."

A child arrived on a breath of wind,

from behind a shower of stars.

Soon those warm little smiles

will fill the room with joy.

.

Ten tiny toes,

so small and so sweet.

Ten little fingers,

all their very own.

Two eyes, a nose and a mouth —

oh, how easy it is to fall head over heels.

A new bloom has arrived in the home,

a little one with the softest hair.

.

I trace your dear little face,

the apple of your tiny cheek.

Your fine bright brows,

your silk-soft hair.

Aale Tynni

.

Life, you gave me this task. And I didn't dare say no.

The hair is still damp, a hand reaching into the air. My job is to take that hand and guide those very first steps.

I feel so small. Even smaller than this newborn.

E-L Kantola

.

Hair soft as down,

little fingers and toes spread wide —

no idea yet

what feelings those tiny things will stir!

.

This little one here,

just arrived into the world,

brand new in a brand new life,

has brought such joy in their coming.

Birgit Ahokas

.

Tiny and soft,

a story-book child.

You brought happiness with you,

and a smile that lights up the room.

.

So very small still,

like a fairy from a far-off land,

a happy little smile,

rosy cheeks and all.

What a funny little sight I see —
that mouth wide open, grinning free,
so small, not a tooth in sight.
That's a laugh, alright!

Little mouth, what makes you grin so wide?
What joy sets those bright eyes shining?
I ask, but asking gets me nowhere.
They just keep smiling.

A warm bottle of milk, just right.
A kiss on the forehead from mum.
Full right up to the chin —
this tiny little beast.

You ask for so much and receive it all.
You bless the work of our hands.
Only now do they carry grain —
you let us give, and that is everything.
